Facebook has launched an opening salvo in its battle against hoaxes and fake news with the introduction of some new initiatives which will make it easier for the company to tackle the problem, the company has announced. In the initial stage Facebook is focusing on "the worst of the worst": clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, Adam Mosseri, Facebook's vice president responsible for the social network's News Feed, said in a blog post

Firstly, Facebook is testing ways to make it easier for users to report a hoax if they see one on Facebook. Users will be able to click in the upper right hand corner of a post to report a story. Secondly, Facebook will send reported stories to third-party fact checking organizations, and if these organizations identify a story as fake the story will be flagged as "disputed." Stories that have been disputed may appear lower in News Feed, and cannot be made into an advertisement or promoted. Facebook will also move stories down the newsfeed if people are significantly less likely to share them after reading them. Finally, Facebook is cracking down on spammers who masquerade as well-known news organizations by eliminating the ability to spoof domains.
